Uber is currently operational in 22 cities of India, which is the most for any country outside the U.S. The popular ride sharing service has now announced its partnership with the Punjab Government to introduce a new peer-to-peer ride sharing service. As of now, Uber only operates with licensed drivers in the country, so this is a bold step from the company.
The deal was formally signed at the Progressive Punjab Summit in Mohali, Punjab. This peer-to-peer ride service will be launched a pilot program in the region and it is said that the formal release will happen in the next few months, so don't expect to see it right away.
"We are incredibly excited to enter into this agreement with the government of Punjab which will help both consumers and the state reap the benefits of ride-sharing and the growing on-demand, digital economy," Uber India president Amit Jain said.
.
This partnership is expected to open up over 45,000 entrepreneurship opportunities in Punjab and a wide range of full time jobs for the locals, so this will be a very fruitful agreement for both parties involved.
The new agreement will also offer Uber the opportunity to expand to more cities of the state as its services are currently limited to Chandigarh.
